Thailand, also known as "the land of smiles" has a culture that is much more relaxed than its western counterparts and the people are very easy going and accept alternative lifestyles with ease.
Gay people taking a trip to Thailand or those choosing to make this country their permanent home, will find a very relaxed attitude to a gay life. For instance "katoeys" or ladyboys are widely accepted in Thailand as a third gender.
Being gay here is legal however same sex partnerships are not recognized and therefore do not offer the same legal protection.
The age of consent in Thailand is 16 and needs to be strictly adhered to as Thai Laws are very severe against underage sexual activity. Displays of affection ie: kissing in public between couples of ANY sex is seen as inappropriate.
The Thai culture is not ageist as many other cultures are and the older generation may be surprised to find that they are popular and desirable.
